Vacation Time

Hello Families
I will be away for the month of August on vacation. I'm looking forward to spending time with my family at home, as well as, on a few little trips to Portland, Kelowna, and camping at Cultas Lake. I will see you all again in September, well rested and recharged!

Book: If You Give A Pig A Pancake by Laura Numeroff
Subject: Science and Math

"If you give a pig a pancake, she'll want some syrup to go with it." The cause and effect nature of this story lends itself well to the children making pancakes as they think and predict "If I add this pancake mix (solid) to the water (liquid), I get pancake batter (liquid)" and "If I add this pancake batter (liquid) to heat (hot pan), I get a pancake (solid)" I left the last sentence for the children to complete "If you give a child a pancake, you get . . . " Anne gave the perfect response - "Sticky!"

The children decided which syrup they like more blueberry or old fashioned. We used a graph to collect the information and to see which syrup was most preferred.

Book: Honey Honey Lion By Jan Brett
Subject: Music, movement, art

In the story, the honey badger follows the honey bird who follows the bee back to the hive to find the sweet honey!

After sharing stories of when they've seen bees the children watched a video to study how bees move. They made bee finger puppets to play a freeze game to the music of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of The Bumblebee.

Where is the bee flying to? "The hive!" the children exclaim! The children used potato stamps to create the hexagon pattern of the bee hive.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs in the book that inspired this weeks activities.

The story illustrates food coming to us in forms of weather! The children were asked "Where does our food come from?"
"the store"
"my house"
"Costco"

The children investigated where bread comes using books and a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UjUWfwWAC4

Then, using a bread machine, the children made bread mmmmmm the aroma of freshly baked bread filled the daycare! The loaf was soon gobbled up with butter and jam.
